On 5 March, the ALDE Party and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation co-hosted a Liberal Breakfast with a focus on the results of the February elections in Slovakia.

The event kicked off with Renew Europe MEP Martin Hojsík and European Commission Policy Advisor Lucia Kleštincová discussing the results of the election, in which unfortunately ALDE member Progressive Slovakia did not receive enough votes to win seats in the parliament. The Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) party won 25.02% of the vote, beating the Direction-Social Democracy (Smer-SD) party, which has been the governing party in Slovakia for the past 12 years.

The government coalition talks are expected to begin shortly, with debate mainly surrounding who will receive ministry positions. Issues such as corruption and civil liberties inspired voters to a turnout of 63.94%, the highest since 2002.

The event concluded with a question and answer portion where topics such as the role of social media in election campaigns, the importance of continuing to push for environmental legislation and how people can continue to support the values of liberal democracy in Europe.

Martin Hojsík concluded the morning by saying, “We have a lot to learn, and we are also willing to share what we learn. We are determined and full of energy to go on, and we are excited to work together to make sure that the liberal values are getting stronger.”
